After completing my research on the nuclear situation, I wanted to learn more about what could be instigating such an insane rivalry. This led me to a long study of US and USSR competition in third world countries around the globe. Third World Ties, a sprawling assemblage of “table paintings,” is the result of that study. The large center section symbolizes the US and USSR bolted together with their nuclear arsenals bristling at one another. Ropes lead from the superpowers to 20 smaller table paintings that surround them. The ropes show the political and economic connections and controls of the superpowers. The sidewalls of each third world sculpture have stamped research information that details the interventions of one or both the mega-states.
