The 500th anniversary of Columbus’ “discovery” of America prompted my production of this project. I researched grade school text books from the 1950’s through the 1980’s and compared that information to more objective information on the exploits and impact of the early explorers in the “New World.” I produced 6 four by four foot portraits, five explorers: Columbus, Vespucci, Balboa, Cortes, and Pissarro; and one missionary, Las Casas. For each portrait I produced a like-sized map painting of the travels of the individual. A performance piece was also produced featuring myself as the narrator, and an actor depicting an elementary teacher. The two actors presented contrasting information during a multi-media show. This project is in the collection of the Visual Art Center, Washington Pavilion, Sioux Falls SD.
